What Really Affects the Page Yield of a Copier Drum Unit?
By APACE technical team · Published October 31, 2026
Why a drum unit's real page count differs from the catalogue figure, how yields are measured, and how to choose between high-yield and economy configurations.

The page yield printed in a drum unit catalogue is an average measured under ideal conditions: A4 paper at 5% coverage. Real output depends on temperature, humidity, paper type and how much of each page is covered with toner. A buyer who compares yields should therefore compare like with like, and plan stock around the conditions in their own market.
How catalogue page yields are measured
APACE states drum unit yields on the same basis as the rest of the industry: the average number of A4 pages at 5% coverage that a unit prints under ideal conditions. A "30K" drum is rated for 30,000 pages; "300K" means 300,000 pages.
That figure is a reference for comparing products, not a guarantee for every machine. Treat it as the starting point of a conversation about real use.
The four factors that change real yield
- Print coverage. A page of dense tables or photos uses far more toner than a short letter, and the drum and its wear parts work harder. Offices printing graphics-heavy documents will see fewer pages than the 5% rating.
- Temperature and humidity. Hot, humid storage and operation affect toner flow and charging. Buyers in tropical and coastal markets should keep consumables sealed until use and store them away from heat.
- Paper type. Rough, dusty or recycled paper increases wear on the drum surface and cleaning blade.
- Machine condition and maintenance. A drum works with the charge roller, cleaning blade, developer and fuser. A worn part elsewhere in the machine can shorten drum life or show up as print defects that look like a drum problem.
High-yield vs economy configurations
APACE builds drum units in three configurations, so the yield can match the customer's print volume and budget:
| Configuration | Typical use | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| High-yield | High-volume offices, copy shops, rental fleets | Anodised aluminium OPC drum imported from Korea; on some models over 100,000 pages |
| Value | Everyday office printing | Quality domestic OPC drum, lower unit price |
| APACE branded | Customers who want premium output | APACE's own premium build |
For high print volumes, compare the cost per page and how often the unit must be replaced, not only the unit price. For lighter use, an economy configuration can be the better buy. Economy versions with a lower stated yield can be discussed for specific models.
Wear parts that set the limit
Inside a drum unit, the OPC drum, charge roller and cleaning blade wear together. APACE produces its own charge rollers; the long-life APACE charge roller is rated for up to 600,000 pages (A4, 5% coverage) and its rubber compound is designed to recover its resistance quickly between −18 °C and 30 °C, which helps prevent background grey in cold conditions.
What to send when you ask for a quotation
- Machine brand and full model (and regional version for export orders)
- Drum unit model or part number
- Expected monthly print volume
- Configuration you want to compare (high-yield, value or branded)
- Quantity and destination
With this information, the sales team can recommend a configuration and confirm the price.
Warranty within the rated yield
APACE drum units are tested on machines before shipping. Within three months, products can be returned without conditions; quality problems within the rated page yield are covered by replacement for six months and repair for one year.
FAQ
Why did my drum unit print fewer pages than the catalogue figure?
Catalogue yields assume A4 paper at 5% coverage under ideal conditions. Higher coverage, heat and humidity, rough paper and wear elsewhere in the machine all reduce the real page count.
Can I order a drum unit with a lower yield and a lower price?
Yes. Economy configurations can be discussed for specific models. Send the model, your print volume and quantity, and the sales team will confirm the configuration and price.
What does 30K mean on a drum unit?
K means thousand. A 30K drum unit is rated for 30,000 pages; 300K means 300,000 pages, both at A4 and 5% coverage.
